Website Design and the NFL

Website Design and the NFL
The NFL is all about competition and the internet is no different. Who cares how they are doing on the field, the real question is how good is you team s website? Did you know that there is an NFL Internet Network Awards given each year? The Internet Super Bowl if you will. Well, this year s Best Website goes to the Philadelphiaeagles.com. Win or lose on the field they have already won the online Super Bowl.
But wait it doesn t stop there. Next, is the DallasCowboys.com winning the Best Content award, the BaltimoreRavens.com take Best Website Design, and the Redskins.com walk off with Best Multimedia Website. Cleaning up with 3 of the top 4 awards the NFC East is clearly dominating NFL Internet Network.
In a bid to break up the NFC East dominance the NFL Internet Working Group announced in early October a plan to centralize ad purchases across all 32 team s websites. Each team would still be able to run ads on their own, but would have to give space to the league. The NFL Internet Working group is charged with crafting a hybrid approach to the Internet by not going all the way down the road to complete league control but moving away from the current, decentralized system. Currently, the only centralization is the NFL Internet Network Toolbar across the top of each team s websites.
But wait I digress. I never finish the awards. Yes, there is more. What award ceremony would be complete without the Most Improved Website award? Who more fitting then the perennial up and comer on the field but the azcardinals.com. Who, by the way are, one of 5 teams whose domain name is not their full team name or mascot name. Fourteen team use their mascot name(i.e. panthers.com, redskins.com) and 13 teams use their full team name(i.e. neworleanssaints.com, baltimoreravens.com). Can t they even spend enough to buy their team name? That might explain why they are in the bottom 2 in website traffic. The other 4 teams also rank at the bottom in traffic.
And which website, you ask, ranks the highest with the most traffic? That distinction goes to the ChicagoBears.com followed closely by the Patriots.com.
Getting back to the best website, the PhiladelphiaEagles.com, their website is designed and built by AmericanEagle.com, which leads all Website Designers having built websites for 6 of the 32 NFL teams. EpicCycle.com comes in second with their website Management system powering 5 team websites.
Most teams use outside Website Design and Web Hosting firms to build and host their websites while 4 appear to do it in house. A handful use Marketing agencies instead of a traditional Website Design company. It is amazing how many different paths the different teams take to implement and maintain their websites.
